We are always eager to feel a baby move in the womb for the first time or we wait for when it will start kicking. But ever wondered if babies sleep in the womb or not? The answer to that is a baby usually tend to sleep most of the time in the womb. When you visit a Well-Being scan clinic, in most cases you will notice your baby is sleeping the whole time. Usually, it has been observed that at least 90% of the time in a day a baby is usually asleep. But the thing to notice that the sleeping pattern changes in every trimester. As the brain develops, the behaviour of the baby changes too. Take a look at the sleeping pattern of each trimester.
The First Trimester
Once you reach the stage of 11 weeks in your pregnancy, your baby will start to yawn though it is not yet the stage of sleep. The brain cells that tell the body to sleep has not been developed yet. After 11 weeks, these brain cells slowly start to develop. As it starts to develop, the baby also begins to sleep exactly the way we sleep. But as these cells are still forming, most of the time, babies tend to be in a perpetual state of sleep before the brain actually wakes up.
The Second Trimester
The waking up of brain means this is the stage when babies develop REM sleep. This is the normal way of sleeping which is known as Rapid Eye Movement sleep. In normal cases, babies either wake up at 24 weeks or week 30. This is when the sleep cycle of waking and sleeping begins. This is the trimester when your baby will actually have the experience of wakefulness.
The Third Trimester
Once you reach the seven-month stage, even then most of the time, your baby will be sleeping. But this is the time when your baby’s brain will go back and forth frequently from non-REM and active REM sleep. This will happen every half hour. Once they wake up, you will feel them stretching. This is also the time when you feel your baby kick for the first time. Usually, before birth, a baby sleeps nine hours every day and a week before birth this time extends to twelve hours every day.
But, among all these a noteworthy point is whether babies stay awake in the night or not. Many times babies become more active when it is time for you to sleep. This is due to the lack of movement by you at night. But every behaves in different ways. But if you are facing this problem, you can ask for advice in well-being scan clinic in Leicester.
