On 22nd March, the whole world will observe World Water Day. Water being the most important thing in our life, it should be preserved as much as possible. We are already facing a lot of water crisis in different parts of the world. Underground water, river water, or water from a plastic water storage tank, all of them come from the same source. But there are so many interesting facts some of which you might not have even heard before. Here are a few of them.
1. 70% of Earth is made up of water. Out of which 97% of the water is salty. The other 3% is drinkable but 2.1% is locked up in polar ice caps and only less than 1% is available as freshwater.
2. Water is sticky. The molecules of the water stick to each other which is why it has such a big surface tension. This is also one of the major reasons that keep you alive. Water is capable of pulling blood up through narrow vessels in the body that too against the gravity.
3. Continuing with the previous fact, water should technically be in gas form at room temperature. But because the molecules stick together, this does not happen.
4. After the common gas H2, it has been observed that water is the second most common component in the whole of the universe.
5. Water is not only present in our Earth but the universe too. NASA discovered that the biggest known cloud made of water vapour exists around a black hole. It is 12 billion light-years from Earth. Ths cloud consists of water that is 140 trillion times more than all the water in the Earth’s ocean.
6. Ice has at least 16 different kinds or phases and every one of them has different crystal structures.
7. Our body consists of 60% to 70% water. Statistically, a human foetus has 95% of water for the before birth. After birth, it consists of 77% of water. In an adult of 70 kg, 42 liters of water is present. 70% of the human brain is water.
8. Another astonishing fact is that hot water can be frozen a lot faster than cold water. Although the reason for this is unknown, it is commonly known as the Mpemba effect.
9. One of the most concerning fact is that by the time 2025 will come at least two-thirds of the world’s population will face water scarcity.
This World Water Day, enjoy all these facts on water and pledge that we will try to save water as much as possible so that this projection can be proven wrong. Conserve water and spend the water in your plastic water storage tank carefully.
